Vision Boards are the first line of defense against Shiny Ball Syndrome.
Protect yourself, your loved ones, and your future from Shiny Ball Syndrome by making a vison board.
I’m serious about this, if you are anything like me, you change your plans every other week. You start on a new crafting project, workout, diet, book…whatever and a few days later when something “better” comes up you jump ship and run to the shiniest object…and you never complete anything.
I believe the reason this happens to us is that we forget our “why”.
Our minds are processing 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts per day on average, that is a lot of information to process and keep track of. I believe that many of those thoughts are “wants” and “Don’t want”. We process the world through a filter of like and dislike, Wanted and unwanted, positives and negatives. So, it would only be natural for most of those thoughts to be about what we want to see more (or less) of in our day to day experience.
With so many thoughts on what is wanted and unwanted passing through our minds each day, its no wonder we get sidetrack or start procrastinating. If we aren’t hyper-focused on our true desires each day by writing, reading and working towards those goals, they will get mixed up in the mundane day to day goals like, stopping at the store for milk and buying that mansion you just drove by and admired for the billionth time. All goals are filed into the same categories of “I want” unless we make those goals priorities by reviewing them daily.
Vision boards are a quick, fun and easy way to keep your goals literally in front of your face. It will remind you of why you are working so hard when you feel burnt out and remind you of what needs to be done to reach those goals. Sometimes it’s a matter of being reminded that this sacrifice and this period of waiting has a purpose and the purpose is what’s on your vision board.
Vision Boards also remind us of what we truly want because some of our wants are not our own. They are desires, desired by others that we just pick up. Society shows us images of things that they want us to desire so that we will buy more products. One day you may desire something and shift your focus simply because of great marketing. I do this all the time. One minute my goal will be centered around YouTube and vlogging because I saw a very convincing add for Jump cut, and then the next day I see an influencer praising IG influencing so now Instagram becomes my main focus. This flip-flopping keeps us in the same place…like that scene at the beginning of the movie Office Space. The character is stuck in traffic and keeps changing lanes hoping to get into a faster-moving lane only to realize that he has not moved at all because he keeps changing lanes sideways rather than moving forward in one lane.
This is how shiny ball syndrome works, and the best defense against it is to review your goals daily…even several times a day.
The Law of Attraction
“Complete order of the Universe is determined, including everything that comes into your life and everything that you experience. It does so through the magnetic power of your thoughts. Through the Law of Attraction like attracts like. ” (https://www.thesecret.tv/law-of-attraction/)
What that means is that what you think about (and feel about) you bring into your physical experience. So, if you are focused on negative aspects of life, you will just bring more of that into your life and have dominantly negative experiences. On the other hand, if you focus your thoughts and feelings on positive things and what you WANT rather than DON’T WANT, then you will experience more of what is wanted.
A vision board is simply a visual tool to help you keep your desires fresh in you mind so that when you see something you don’t want in your day, you have a visual of what you do want to keep you focused and in the right frame of mind to keep moving forward and crushing your goals.
How to Make a Vision Board
- Step 1- write a list of things you desire to have or experience in your life. What would love to have or be living right now? Write that down.
- Step 2- Gather images of your desires. Grab some magazines and start cutting out images and words that describe what you want.
- Step 3- gather your supplies- You will need scissors, glue, and a poster board, notebook with blank pages or a big piece of cardboard.
- Step4- Glue your pics to the board
- Step 5- place the finished board in a place that you can see it everyday and cut out 5 minutes twice a day to look at the images and focus on the feeling of having those items without interruption.
