5 Ways to Stay Motivated
Who is the one person in the world who can motivate you to accomplish your big goals and dreams?
I’ll give you one guess…YOURSELF.
In my past life, err…I mean previous job, I worked for a certain large and very well known for profit private University. My job was to find the motivation of every potential student that I came into contact with and continue to motivate that person until they had the desire to go to school.
In theory that was a great thing to do, it worked most of the time, but there was a problem with this model…. Eventually most people that enrolled lost motivation, life got hard, they got tired and they ended up quitting after a few courses.
It’s one thing to talk about what your reasons are for wanting your dreams, we can sit and map out a plan for you to execute your goals, but if you aren’t motivated to follow through with your plans NO MATTER WHAT, you will quit when things get hard.
Quitting is the ONLY reason we fail
If you take a closer look at the journeys of any successful person you will discover that they had to push through tons of adversity, they had multiple failures, and kept pushing on through hardships that would make most people crumble. They failed their way to success.
The question is…how can we stay motivated when life gets hard and we hit wall after wall? What will keep us motivated when it seems hopeless?
I feel like I’ve been failing my way to success for years. The process of a content creation is a slow crawl and most days I feel like I’m talking to myself, but I keep going because I know that I have a message that is big and powerful and can change the lives of a few people who can go out and change the lives of a few people and the ripple effect will go on and that is huge.
Know your WHY
The first thing you need to stay motivated while you fail your way to success is a powerful WHY!
Write it down. WHY do you want what you want? What is it that you are aiming for? If its money, you need to dig deeper and determine why you want money…is it because you want to be able to give back to the community? Take care of your aging parents? Pay for you children to go to college? Your why must be bigger than yourself because when shit gets hard, it’s the WHY that will keep you going.
The next thing that keeps me motivated to get up and keep going no matter how tired or defeated I feel is journaling.
How to Stay Motivated
I noticed that when I am not writing out my goals every night before bed, I tend to forget my why, what needs to be done and how I’m going to get it. Our brains are super computers that are programmed by repetition, that’s why when you are watching TV you will see the same commercial 3 or 4 times during one program…because advertisers understand that the more you see something the more likely you will be to take action. So, use that trick on yourself and keep writing out that goal over and over. My favorite tool for this is the Start Today Journal by Rachel Hollis. I write in mine every night. It only takes 5 minutes and when that alarm clock goes off the next morning at 4:30am I know why I have to get out of my comfy bed and take action even when I don’t feel like it.
Affirmations and guided meditation are another way that I keep myself focused and motivated.
It is easy to get stuck in emotionally draining thought patterns. I used to be stuck and feeling tired and depressed all the time. I realized that it was the repetitive negative thoughts I was thinking about myself, my enemies, and what was going “wrong” in my life. I was bombarded by them day and night. I would wake up in the morning and the first thoughts that I would think were negative and it would start my day off with negativity which would snowball and by lunch I would be unmotivated because “what’s the point”.
I squashed that over time by listening to affirmations and guided meditations. Every night at bedtime I play a guided meditation that is meant to program my mind for a specific task or issue. Currently I am listening to a financial abundance meditation because financial success is my focus right now.
At the beginning of my journey I would listen to self-love meditations because I had identified that negative self-talk was holding me back from happiness. There are hundreds of free meditations on YouTube for anything you could possibly need. This Channel is my favorite for guided meditations.
Bonus! When you listen to guided meditations at bedtime, it helps you fall asleep faster. I almost never stay awake past the first 5 minutes which helps me tremendously since I suffer from insomnia as well. Don’t worry about if the affirmations are working when you sleep, your subconscious is still listening and absorbs all of the benefits while you sleep which ends up being even more powerful because your mind isn’t “on” to worry about your day and if you unplugged the curling iron.
In the morning I turn on an affirmation video and listen to affirmations while I stretch or do my make up, I sometimes repeat the affirmations to myself in my mind or out loud so that I am also speaking my affirmations into existence.
The last thing…this is really the most important way to stay motivated, is to keep a gratitude journal.
How to Stay Motivated
The Start Today Journal has a section for gratitude so it’s a bonus. I also like to spend time through out my day mentally noticing little things that I am grateful for as I go about my day like…organic food, or a sweet text from a friend.
Gratitude is huge when staying motivated because it trains your brain to focus on good things. When shit gets hard and failures start piling up, its important to find the little things to be grateful for so that hopelessness doesn’t sneak in and steal your motivation and momentum.
